Patients with inflammatory bowel disease are at an increased risk of infection, not just because of immunosuppressive therapy, but also due to the disease itself. Many of these infections are preventable through the use of vaccinations; however, vaccines seem to be underutilized in these patients. Even though there is evidence of lower response rates to vaccination in inflammatory bowel disease patients on immunosuppressive therapy, it may still be sufficient to enhance immunity; hence, timely vaccination in patients with inflammatory bowel disease is highly recommended. In general, immunocompetent patients with inflammatory bowel disease can follow the vaccination recommended for general population. However, special considerations must be taken into account in patients receiving immunosuppressive therapy. This review presents the current vaccination recommendations in the setting of patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
