Etiology of inflammatory bowel disease: new insights

This article reviews current knowledge about the main areas of research in regards the role of genetic, immunological, and environmental factors implicated in the onset and exacerbation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Over the past decade, there has been enormous progress in the discovery of numerous genetic variants that increase or decrease the risk of IBD.
